Introduction
Hey there, fellow runner! Welcome to the exhilarating world of running, where every step you take brings you closer to unlocking your ultimate potential in fitness and beyond. I’m here to guide you through this thrilling journey of embracing running as an exercise routine and a true passion that can transform your life (it transformed mine).
Why Running?
Let’s start with the big question: why run? Well, let me tell you, there’s something magical about lacing up your shoes, hitting the pavement, and feeling the rhythm of your heartbeat syncing with the cadence of your feet. For me, running began as a simple desire to set a goal of finishing a half marathon, but it quickly evolved into something much more profound.
I remember the first time I stepped off for race prep. I was a bit apprehensive, unsure if I could even finish the first 20-minute “easy run” before collapsing into a puddle of sweat. But as I started to move, something clicked. With each step, I felt stronger, more alive. And when I finally finished that first run, a sense of accomplishment took over.
The Journey Begins: Getting Started
If you’re new to running, it’s completely normal to feel a bit intimidated. Trust me, we’ve all been there. The key is to start slow and be patient with yourself. Set realistic goals, whether it’s running for five minutes without stopping or completing your first 5K race. I know what you’re thinking “This guy just said he started running to run in a half marathon and now he is saying to set realistic goals?”. That is one of the reasons I started the Pacing Parenthood community to share my experiences and where I would have changed certain things in my running and overall fitness journey.
One piece of advice I wish someone had given me when I first started: invest in a good pair of running shoes. You can ask my joints yourself. After finishing a month of race prep in Under Armour shoes (I still have no idea what the shoe was even called) my joints were aching way more than all the research was telling me they should. Seriously, your body will thank you later. Oh, and don’t forget to stretch before and after your runs. It may seem like a hassle, but it can make a world of difference in preventing injuries when working out.
Overcoming Challenges
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: running can be tough. There will be days when you’d rather stay in bed, that’s the easier thing to do. Trust me, as a husband and father working a full-time job with a two-hour round-trip commute I get it. But here’s the thing: the hardest part is often just getting out the door. Once you start moving, you’ll wonder why you ever hesitated in the first place.
One of the biggest challenges I faced as a new runner was learning to silence that little voice in my head that said I couldn’t do it. You know the one I’m talking about. But with each run, I proved that voice wrong. I discovered a strength and resilience within myself that I never knew existed.
Something I recommend to every person who is trying to add a fitness routine into their life is the importance of understanding their “why”. My “why” is family. Working towards the race day goal or hitting the new PR (personal record) on a lift is a way to show my son that you can accomplish anything you work towards, setting the example I want to be in his life.
Don’t compare yourself to others. Social media comes with a lot of advantages but arguably one of the greatest negatives is the ability to see what others WANT us to see in their lives. A lesson in life in general is to stay on your path. If you compare your journey to the one you see others posting on social media you are pursuing a losing battle.
The Joy of Progress
One of the most rewarding aspects of running is seeing progress over time. Whether it’s running a little farther, a little faster, or simply feeling more comfortable on your runs, every milestone is worth celebrating.
A video I almost always see new runners posting on TikTok or YouTube is about how they could barely run a mile when they first started their running journey. Now when posting their video their warmups are miles, that’s right not a mile but MILES!
I’ll never forget the feeling of crossing the finish line of my first half marathon. As I gasped for breath and wiped away tears of exhaustion and triumph, I realized just how far I had come. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. I never forgot my “why”.
Finding Your Passion
One of the beautiful things about running is that there are so many ways to do it. From road running to trail running, from short sprints to ultra marathons, the possibilities are endless. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you. I recommend writing down goals and tailoring the type of running to your personal goals.
For me, it was distance running that truly ignited my passion for the sport. There’s something about playing a podcast and leaving the world behind for a few hours that’s therapeutic……..oh and I can’t forget to mention the runners-high!
Building a Community
Running may seem like a solitary activity, but it’s a fantastic way to connect with others who share your passion. Whether it’s joining a local running group, participating in races, or simply chatting with fellow runners on social media and online runners forums, the running community is incredibly supportive and welcoming.
There’s a special bond that forms between runners, a mutual understanding of the highs and lows that come with the sport.
Embracing the Lifestyle
As you continue on your running journey, you’ll start to notice changes not just in your body, but in your mind and spirit as well. Running has a way of clearing the mind, relieving stress, and boosting confidence like nothing else.
Once running becomes a routine there is a noticeable difference day to day. If I don’t wake up first thing in the morning and get my body moving the rest of my day is “off”.
There’s something about the rhythmic pounding of feet on pavement that soothes the soul and restores a sense of balance.
Conclusion
So, there you have it: the thrilling journey of embracing running as a fitness passion. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a newbie lacing up your shoes for the first time, remember this: every step you take brings you one step closer to unlocking your ultimate potential.
So go ahead, hit the pavement, chase your dreams, and discover the joy and fulfillment that running can bring to your life. The road ahead may be long and challenging, but trust me, the view from the finish line is worth it.
